Your user name is the key to your online identity on many sites. A username is commonly paired with a password, but the username is not private. Sometimes, it can be difficult to find a username that is not taken (especially if you're registering at a popular website) and it can get annoying trying to remember a different username for every website. Here are some tips for choosing a good user name.
- Context: If you are using the username for e-mail accounts, bank websites or tax preparation website like eLagaan, it's okay to include part of your name. However using part of your name is not recommended, if you're on a public site or a forum where you may want to choose a more anonymous username.
- Variations: Use a variation of your name that is easy for you to remember but difficult for others to associate with your name. For example, you may look at your Middle name or Last name which is seldom spoken (e.g. Kumar = Ramuk)
- Keep it Simple: Don't spend too much time on deciding your name. A good name is one that you should be able to remember. Don't make it so complicated that you will forget it. Avoid using too many symbols, special characters or Upper and Lower case letters. You may look at twisting a bit using numbers, periods(.), hyphens (-) or Underscores ( _ ). Make sure they are numbers that are of significance to you, but not necessarily revealing, like anniversaries or vehicle number (e.g. Ramuk8055).
- Identity Safe: Never use your identity numbers like PAN, Passport or Driving License number as username or password. They may be hard to guess but could give malicious hackers a coveted piece of important information.
- Length: Donot use a very short username. Many sites require user names to be between 6-14 characters.
- Life: Donot choose a username in hurry or haste as you may notbel able to change the same later. This is more important for sites where will have an account for years to come.
